Forever Home Cemetery Roadside Sign

Thousands of people drive past us every day on Lincoln Parkway, along Historic Route 66, and almost none of them know what is here.

There are only four cemeteries in the whole of Illinois where a person and the pets they love can rest together in the same grave site. Forever Home is one of them, and it is right here in Logan County. Families drive from other counties once they find out. The problem is that almost nobody finds out.

A sign at the road would change that. Not a small marker, but something visible from the highway, carved in natural limestone and lit at night, telling everyone driving by that this place exists and what it is for. Roughly ten feet wide and four feet tall, engraved with the cemetery's name and the words that describe what we do: People & Pets, Together.

What it would take:

• A natural limestone sign stone
• Sandblast engraving, etched and painted
• A stone base, concrete footing, and setting the stone
• Plantings, mulch, and two ground lights

This one is on our wish list, and we would love to see it happen one day.

Wheelchair-Accessible Walkway to the Gazebo

The gazebo is where families gather for a service, and where people sit when they come to visit. Right now the only way to reach it is across the lawn, which rules it out for anyone using a wheelchair or a walker, and makes it hard going after rain.

What we picture is a four-foot-wide concrete walkway, about 150 feet, from the parking area out to the gazebo. Concrete rather than gravel, because gravel is not truly accessible for a wheelchair or a walker. It would also include a small concrete pad north of the gazebo for the ash area.

It is a plain, practical idea. It would simply mean that everyone who wants to sit with someone they love can get there.

What it would take:

• Concrete, roughly 150 feet of four-foot walk
• Forming and finishing, the labor to form, pour and finish it
• Site prep, grading the route and a base underneath
• A small pad north of the gazebo for the ash area, about 10 by 20 feet
• Gravel or fill for the base

This one is on our wish list, and we would love to see it happen one day.

Berm Clean Up

Another large and much needed project at the shelter today. The overgrown cedar bushes were removed today. They were getting to be a maintenance issue and so Jeff Short removed them with a mini excavator. We hope to landscape this burm so it will be easier to take care of and look better for the shelter and forever home cemetery.
